In 2022, we came across an charity called Keiran's Legacy, which was founded after the sad death of Keiran McKandie, when he had an accident while mountain-biking, but whose life might have been saved had the police car that had attended the accident been equipped with a mobile defibrillator. Keiran's Legacy set about raising funds to ensure that all police cars in the north of Scotland would carry defibrillators.
At around thre same time, Rotary in Callander discovered that police cars in our locality were also short of these mobile defibrillators and we contacted Police Scotland to see whether we would could help. The response was positive and so we set about raising funds to purchase one defibrillator, but we were so successful that we managed to get two. The purchase was made in collaboration with Keiran's Legacy and the defibrillators were handed over to the police at a ceremony held in Callander Kirk Hall in September 2023. Keiran's parents were also in attendance and gave a lecture and a demonstration of how these defibrillators were used.
It was a huge honour to have them there and we were so pleased to have been able to a part of their story.
In 2016, as the centenary of the end of World War I approached, Rotary in Callander discussed how we might go about commemorating this significant anniversary. As a result we decided that we would like to create a commemorative grove on the lower slopes of Ben Ledi. To kick things off we spoke with the landowner, Forestry Land Scotland (FLS) to seek permission and to identify a suitable site. We undertook research into those from Callander who had fallen and through the help of Callander's Heritage Society, were able to source photos of each of them.
Then, through our resident graphic designer, Michael Kay, we set about creating an information board that would be both eye-catching and informative, but also capable of withstanding the weather conditions on the side of Ben Ledi. FLS were hugely helpful with this. While Michael created the design, FLS were able to arrange and part-pay for its manufacture and to instal it by the side of the path leading up to Ben Ledi, beside the commemorative grove.
Over a hundred seedlings of indigenous trees were purchased and to help plant them, both McLaren High School (MHS) and the Primary School selected a dozen pupils each to attend the planting ceremony and to help plant the trees themselves. But first the planting ceremony party were led by MHS piper, Rebecca More, down the path to the grove site. Once there, FLS were on hand to show the children (and Rotarians) how best to plant the saplings and great fun was had by all.
Once the seedlings were planted, came the formal ceremony. Mike Cantlay OBE said a few words and unveiled the temporary board, Rotarian Brian McKay recited the poem 'For The Fallen' and British Legion representative, Tom Jones, played the 'Last Post' on his trumpet. Also in attendance, representing Callander Community Council, who had kindly donated to the cost of the project, via the Doune Wind Farms Fund, was Mike Luti,
