We could bore you to death by telling you how Rotary was formed; that it is a worldwide organisation of 35,000 clubs with 1.4 million members, and, and ... but if you want to know all of that then click the Rotary logo above. What you really need to know is why you should join 'Rotary in Callander'.
Well, as you can see above, we are a welcoming, if sometimes crazy, bunch of folks. Basically, we are just a group of ordinary residents, mainly of Callander, but also from elsewhere in what used to be called "West Perthshire", who want to put something 'back in'. So, have a look at the sort of things we get up to, and if this sounds like the sort of thing you'd like to be involved with, why not get in touch - email us here.
So what do we get up to?
Throughout the year, we organise fundraising events such as Bottle Stalls, Coffee Mornings, Bag-packing etc., and from what we raise we donate to worthy causes, with a focus on our community.
Over the years, we have helped CHAS, Strathcarron Hospice, Killin Mountain Rescue Team, Trossachs Search and Rescue, Startup Stirling, and Ripple Retreat, amongst many others.
Internationally ....
... we have donated to various Disaster Relief funds, we've helped bring much needed water to villages in Africa, helped eradicate Polio from the world, ensured poor children in disadvantaged countries have had something to look forward to at Christmas.
Helping Young People
Our Club has always been keen on doing things to help the young people in our community. As such, one of our members has the specific role of liaising with the primary and secondary schools to see what help we can give. Historically, we have sent young teenage children on 'outward bound' type residential weeks to develop leadership skills, we have funded McLaren High School pupils to enable them to participate in overseas aid ventures.
Every year Rotary in Callander organises a Quiz to which every primary school in the McLaren catchment area is invited. This is not only a great learning opportunity, but also an opportunity for Primary 7 pupils to engage with their future High School colleagues. The kids have a great time ... and so do the Rotarians helping out!
Every year, McLaren High School presents awards to pupils based on academic or physical achievements. A number of years ago, Rotary in Callander offered to sponsor a different kind of award - one that would go to the pupil who had done the most to overcome adversity in their life. And so, the Endeavour Trophy was established and is now a part of the end-of-year awards ceremony at the school.
But it's not all about helping out - we socialise too
We meet twice a month to have a meal, to have a chat and if there's an event coming up, we'll discuss that too. Four times a year, we invite someone along to speak to us, usually with a visual presentation, about something of interest - on these occasions, non-members often come along too. We have Christmas Party, we quiz etc, etc,. and once a month, we put on a Bingo session for the older members of our community - they're great fun!
