Rotary in Callander (or Callander and West Perthshire Rotary Club, as it was originally known) was chartered in 1971 by a group of like-minded professional men who came largely from both Callander and Doune, and yes, back then, it was men only. Our first President was David Malone, and since then, we have had 46 Presidents, some of whom have served two or more times. A full list of our Club Presidents can be found by clicking here.
Over the years Rotary in Callander has seen many changes, not least was the decision to admit women into the Club, in 1999. This had been a long time in coming, and had not been met, at first, with complete agreement amongst the male members. But these old-fashioned views have long been consigned to the past, and since then, the Club has had three lady Presidents, one of whom has served three separate terms.
Rotary, of course, is primarily about helping others, whether locally, nationally or internationally. This can take the form of fundraising to enable donations of money to be given to worthy causes, or it might be in lending a hand, or one's professional expertise. Over the years, we reckon our Club has raised over £1/2 million in today's money.
There is also a social side to our activities. Nowadays, we meet twice a month to have a meal, enjoy each other's company and discuss any events we might have coming up. We also have the occasional guest speaker to come and talk to us about some interesting topic or other. Generally, non-members are welcome to come along to these events.
Rotary Clubs are administered by a group of elected members, know as Council. Council normally consists of - President, Senior Vice President, Junior Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Convenors and lay members. Our current Council consists of eight members and their make-up can be found by clicking here.
One of Rotary's longstanding traditions is to visit other clubs around the world and to exchange club banners when they do so. Over the years we have collected hundreds of banners and if you are interested, you can view these here.
